How to create a quiz
Everything you need to go from a blank page to a quiz you can practice, share, or publish — including bulk importing from a spreadsheet.
1. Choose a quiz type
Each quiz is one of two types. You pick the type when you create it, and it can't be changed later.
Fill in the blank
Each item is a label and a passage. Cloze hides words for you to recall. Best for poems, scripture, speeches, lyrics, and lines.
Multiple choice
Each item is a question and its answer. Wrong choices are drawn from your other answers. Best for facts, vocabulary, and definitions.
2. Create the quiz
- Sign in and go to your Dashboard, then click New quiz.
- Enter a title and an optional short description (up to 300 characters, no web links).
- Pick Fill in the blank or Multiple choice.
- Optionally turn on Share by link so anyone with the link can open it. New quizzes start private.
- Click Create quiz. You'll land on the editor to add items.
3. Add items one at a time
At the bottom of the item list in the editor, fill in the new item row and click add.
- Fill in the blank: a label (e.g. Psalm 23:1) and the passage text. You don't mark blanks yourself — Cloze chooses which words to hide based on the difficulty you practice at.
- Multiple choice: the question and the correct answer. After saving, you can open a question and add your own wrong answers (one per line); leave it empty to use answers from your other questions.
4. Paste many items at once
Below the item list, the editor has a paste box — no file needed.
Fill in the blank: "Paste a passage"
Paste text with a blank line between passages. Each paragraph becomes an item. If there are no blank lines, each line becomes its own item. Labels are created automatically (for example from a verse reference at the start), or numbered like Item 1, Item 2 using a prefix you choose.
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Multiple choice: "Paste questions"
One question per line, with the question and answer separated by a | or a tab. Copying two columns straight out of Excel or Google Sheets works, since that pastes with tabs.
What is the capital of France? | Paris What is the largest planet? | Jupiter Chemical symbol for gold | Au
5. Import from a CSV file
For bigger lists, keep your items in a spreadsheet and upload it. In the editor, find Bulk import from CSV and click Choose CSV. Items are added to the end of the quiz; existing items aren't changed.
The file needs a header row with two columns: Label and Phrase. Column order doesn't matter and extra columns are ignored. What goes in each column depends on the quiz type:
| Column | Fill in the blank | Multiple choice |
|---|---|---|
| Label | Item name (e.g. John 3:16) | The question |
| Phrase | The passage to memorize | The correct answer |
Fill-in-the-blank example
Label,Phrase John 3:16,"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son..." Psalm 23:1,"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."Download fill-in-the-blank sample
Multiple-choice example
Label,Phrase What is the capital of France?,Paris What is the largest planet in our solar system?,Jupiter "Who wrote ""Romeo and Juliet""?",William ShakespeareDownload multiple-choice sample
For multiple choice you can also add optional Wrong1, Wrong2, Wrong3 columns with your own wrong answers. Leave them out and Cloze uses your other answers instead.
Making a CSV from a spreadsheet
- Google Sheets: File → Download → Comma-separated values (.csv).
- Excel: File → Save As → choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited).
- Numbers (Mac): File → Export To → CSV.
If some rows have problems (a missing label or phrase, or text that's too long), the good rows are still imported and the editor lists which row numbers were skipped and why.
6. Practice, share, and publish
- Practice: open the quiz and start any item. For fill in the blank, adjust difficulty to hide more words.
- Share by link or QR code: turn on link sharing in the editor, then use Copy link or QR code. Free for everyone.
- Publish to the public library: use Publish to public catalog. Quizzes are checked before they appear; editing the title, description, or items sends it back for review.
- Custom link (Pro): give a quiz a short address like cloze.online/q/psalm-23.
7. Limits and troubleshooting
- Titles and labels: up to 200 characters.
- Descriptions: up to 300 characters, no web links.
- Passages and answers: up to 1,000 characters each.
- CSV files: up to 500 rows and 2 MB per import. Split larger lists into several files.
- New accounts (under 7 days old) can create up to 3 quizzes per day.
- "CSV must have a header row" — make sure the first row is exactly
Label,Phrase. - Strange characters (é, ’) — re-save the file as CSV UTF-8.
8. Import a whole collection (ZIP, Pro)
Pro members can build a collection of many quizzes in one upload. On the Collections page click Import from ZIP, pick your file, check the preview, then click Create collection. Every quiz starts private; publish them one by one when ready.
Start from the collection template. Put one folder per quiz inside the ZIP. Folders are added in alphabetical order, so number them.
my-collection.zip
collection.txt (optional) name + description
01-psalm-23/
quiz.txt title, description, tags, type
items.csv Label,Phrase
02-capitals/
quiz.txt
items.csv Label,Phrase,Wrong1,Wrong2,Wrong3quiz.txt and collection.txt are plain text with one key: value per line:
title: Psalm 23 description: The shepherd psalm, verse by verse. tags: bible, psalms, memory type: fill-in-the-blank (or: multiple-choice)
- Shortcut: a ZIP of plain CSV files (no folders or text files) also works. Each CSV becomes a quiz named after the file. A CSV with Wrong columns becomes multiple choice.
collection.txtacceptsname:anddescription:. Without it, the ZIP's file name is used.- Up to 50 quizzes and 5 MB per ZIP. Each CSV follows the same rules as above.
- If one quiz has a problem, the preview marks it and the others still import.
- Your normal quiz limits still apply to the number of new quizzes.
